Mother-tongue as a Subject

In Masbate, Minasbate is the mother-tongue most spoken by Masbateῆos basically Bisaya in the city and other municipalities. It’s being different has made us unique among others in our country. The diversity of our language tells the story of the origin of our social and cultural backgrounds. Mother Tongue as a subject in the K to 12 basic education curriculum is being taught from grades one to three. It’s a great avenue to the development and transition of the first language to second language and so on. For decades its importance was studied by experts before it was totally implemented in our educational system.

The existence of Mother Tongue as subject to the curriculum is imperative especially to the elementary schools situated in far flung barangays. The learners in this area was isolated from technology and learning materials like books, magazines and others. Thus teachers find it hard to teach the curriculum content which has to be performed by the learners. But with the birth of the implementation of Mother Tongue specifically here in Masbate, teachers was able to create significant instructional materials like big books that are directly related to the lives and daily experiences of the clientele. It has given hope among teachers and pupils opening wonders of possibilities of learning.

Minasbate gaps the barriers of communication unclogging the power of expression of every learner during class discussion. Truly, Mother Tongue is an instrument in the progress and development of the intellectual, physical and moral aspects of human beings which is responsible in shaping our values, customs and beliefs that mark our identity as Masbateῆos.
